Extraordinary takes us on a side-splitting journey that takes a light-hearted look at finding where you belong in a world that doesn’t appear to have room for you.
We follow Jen, the only person in the world without superpowers. As she stumbles her way through her ordinary life, Jen’s hilarious attempts to come to terms with her regular-ness provide both laugh-out-loud and deeply poignant moments.
With a playful and edgy sense of humour, Jen is a character all of us can relate to. Despite being included in the ‘superperson’ genre, Extraordinary focuses on the personal element more through Jen. Feeling lost, being imperfect, and living a chaotic life are all obstacles that Jen faces as she tries to stave off the ever-present threat of a quarter-life crisis.
Determined to discover her superpower, Jen is desperate to escape her monotonous life and her coming-of-age story will lead her on a path of self-discovery and ultimately, self-acceptance.
From the producers of the award-winning Killing Eve, Extraordinary takes an off-kilter look at the superhero genre. Focusing on both comedic and touching moments in equal measure, the original series is a breath of fresh air for the genre. The characters all feel real and intensely relatable, which is a welcome departure from most of the over-the-top superhero action that takes place on our screens.
Whilst the subverted superhero genre might not be familiar to most of us, several of the faces in Extraordinary should be. Written by Northern Irish woman Emma Moran, the original series is brimming with typical Irish humour. Irish women also appear on screen in the form of series lead Jen, played by Mairead Tyers (Belfast), and Siobhan McSweeney (Derry Girls), who stars as Jen’s witty mam.
