Lizard Squad claim they hacked Facebook. NOT true, says the website

Facebook and Instagram were down for about 40 minutes this morning.

Updated 10.25 am

FACEBOOK HAS DENIED that a 40 minute worldwide outage was caused by hackers.

Both Facebook and Instagram were down across web and mobile this morning in the biggest outage since September 2010.

Hacking collective Lizard Squad, who yesterday took down the Malaysia Airlines website, have claimed responsibility for the Facebook outage but this has been denied by the company.

“The downtime was caused by a technical issue we introduced. It was not connected to Lizard Squad, Snowmageddon, or any other external party,” Facebook said.

The hackers have also claimed that passenger information was stolen during yesterday’s attack on the Malaysia Airlines website and have threatened to release the information today.

The outage occurred as the northeastern United States was experiencing a snowstorm that has shut down major cities including New York.

Facebook has about 2 million users in Ireland and roughly 1.35 billion users worldwide.

The Facebook outage trended worldwide with Instagram taking to Twitter to acknowledge the problem but Facebook staying silent  during the disruption.
