7 events to check out with the kids this weekend - from fairytales to interactive orchestras

Here’s our pick of the weekend’s best family events around Ireland.

DUBLIN

Crash Bang Wallop – Permission To Launch: The City of London Sinfonia, a fantastically informal orchestra, is hosting a family session this Sunday at the National Concert Hall. CLS is known for its bright and boisterous family-friendly performances, and now the magic is coming to Dublin. They’ll even invite kids onto the main stage to check out how an orchestra actually works.

Children’s Workshops at the Botanics: Budding artists aged 4 to 7 are under the tutelage of artist Niamh Sinnott on Saturday as they explore creativity through nature. Bigger adventurers aged 8 to 12 are welcome at the afternoon workshop, using found materials at the Botanic Gardens to make art.

WICKLOW

YARN Storytelling Festival: Kilruddery Farm Market will be lighting the campfire and hosting two family-friendly storytelling sessions this weekend as this brilliant festival returns. Liz Weir will host a session for families with kids aged 4+ on Saturday and Joe Brennan will be telling a tale for those aged 5+ on Sunday.

CORK

Paddington 2 Screening and Treasure Hunt: Cork Film Festival is hosting a special showing of Paddington 2 on Saturday. Each family will be given clues to find festival volunteers in yellow t-shirts who will give you a Paddington sticker. Once you collect three stickers, come back to the Gate to claim your pre-screening treat from Paddington himself!

Humpty Dumpty’s Big Eggventure: This Sunday an all-singing, all-dancing rendition of Humpty Dumpty is coming to the Theatre Royal Waterford. Sing along, solve puzzles and meet a range of classic fairytale characters in this interactive show. Above all, it’s a fantastic way to gear up for panto season…

GALWAY

Alice In Wonderland: Blue Raincoat Theatre Company is bringing this classic fairytale to life at the Town Hall Theatre with a show for older kids and adults alike. Expect to go down the rabbit hole with Alice, and to happen upon some fantastical and unpredictable events along the way.

LIMERICK

This Little Piggy: We all know how the story of the Three Little Piggies ended, but have you ever wondered what happened next? Meet Sausage, Rasher and Little Pig at  Limerick’s Belltable Arts Hub this Saturday to find out, in a fantastic show for all the family.
