Dream car of the week: Ferrari California 30

Every week we bring you a dream car – you know, the one you’d buy if you won the lottery.

THE FERRARI CALIFORNIA 30 is the entry level Ferrari. You know, the affordable one!

This 30 Edition sees a power increase of 30hp and weight savings of 30kg compared to the previous model – and it also comes with a Handling Speciale package, which adds stiffer springs and more responsive magnetorheological dampers.

A grand tourer with a retractable hard top, this motor has buckets of character and is perfect for sports driving but also suitable for long journeys and trips to town.

Ferrari turned to its partner Pininfarina for the design of the California and the result is a muscular, flowing shape with sculpted lines with great proportions – so it looks good whether the roof is up or down.

The car is finished in Grigio Silverstone and the front features the teardrop lighting cluster and slatted radiator grille that has become a Ferrari trademark.

The slender air intake vent on the bonnet and the side air vents both echo distinctive features of the legendary 1957 Ferrari California 250. This particular car rolls on 20-inch diamond sport wheels with ceramic brakes.

The cabin is a luxurious place to be and comes with a carbon-fibre center console arch, leather-upholstered dash in a two-tone black and tan, and a central 6.5-inch touch screen with satnav.

The seats are upholstered in diamond stitched tan leather and can be adjusted in every conceivable way for the perfect driving position. The backrest structure is built from magnesium – designed to achieve the maximum in comfort and ergonomics while reducing weight at the same time.

While this is not the most spacious of cars, there is a fold-down rear seat-back linking the cockpit with the 340-litre boot. (This becomes 240 litres with the roof down.)

As you would expect with such a high-end car there is a suite of safety features including ABS, stability control, front and side airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners as well as much more.

This car is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.3litre V8 engine mated to an automatic dual clutch transmission with no fewer than seven forward gears, which sends power to the rear wheels.

That V8 punches out 490hp with maximum torque of 505Nm at 5000rpm. It does the 0-100km/h dash in about 3.8 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 312km/h or 194mph if you are keeping it old school.

This 2013 Ferrari California 30 Edition falls into tax band G, which is €2,350 a year. It comes with 20,921km on the clock and a €229,500 price tag.
