Finbarr 'Finny' Coleman.

Tributes paid to ‘sports fanatic’ (40) who died in Co Cork car crash yesterday

Finbarr Coleman was a huge sports fan and a well-known building contractor in Innishannon.

FINBARR ‘FINNY’ COLEMAN (40) died following a single-vehicle car crash in Kinsale, Co Cork yesterday.

He was a passenger in a car that left the road and hit a tree at Ballynamona, Kinsale, last night around 1.30am.

Finbarr, who was single, lived at Innishannon in Co Cork with his two brothers. He was a well-known building contractor in the area.

He was a huge sports fan and earlier this year attended the Aintree Grand National.

He was hugely interested in Road Bowling and it is believed that he was coming from a road bowling match near Kinsale.

He was also a massive fan of Valley Rovers GAA club.

Local Independent Councillor Alan Coleman, who is no relation of Finbarr, said the ‘’whole area is absolutely devastated by his death’’.

“He was a really nice chap and would be very well-known in the area,’’ the councillor said.

The South-East GAA board in Cork said:

“Our sincerest condolences to the Coleman family and everyone in Valley Rovers club on Finny’s untimely passing. Our thoughts are with you all at this time.”

Finbarr is survived by his brothers, sister-in-law Fiona, adored niece and best friend Katie C, Brendan’s partner Imelda, extended family, neighbours and his large circle of friends. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.

The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was arrested at the scene in connection with offences to the Road Traffic Act. He has since been released without charge.

There were three passengers in the rear of the car, one of whom received serious injuries.

Gardaí are continuing their investigation into this incident and have asked the public for their help.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Ballynamona area between 1:15am and 1:45am are asked to come forward.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bandon Garda Station on 023 885 2200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
