A KILKENNY WOMAN has found an extremely rare bug in a punnet of raspberries.

Andrea Doyle picked up the €1.79 punnet of berries in Tesco in New Ross, Co Wexford and when she opened them found what was confirmed to be a firebug, a species only ever recorded once in Ireland.

The bugs are mainly seen in the US, central America, India and Spain, where the berries were packed.

Andrea told TheJournal.ie that she had been about to give the berries to her four-year-old daughter when she noticed the interloper.

“I got some shock, there was also eggs on the fruit.”

Andrea has been advised to report the find to the National Biodiversity Data Centre and was offered a refund on the berries.
