4 events for... fitness enthusiasts looking for a New Year challenge

Fancy burning 7,000 calories or so?

ALONG WITH DREARY weather, low bank balances and the urge to book a holiday as soon as possible, January brings with it an influx of health and fitness related events. 

Whether your goals for the year are health and fitness inspired or not, getting involved in an event that will get your heart racing is sure to help towards beating the January blues, if nothing else.

From running up the Sugar Loaf to competing in a marathon, we’ve rounded up four events around the country that are sure to make you sweat…

1. World Half Marathon Day

When: January 13, 1:10pm

Where: Belleek Woods, Co Mayo

Run, walk or jog 13.1 miles through Belleek Woods on World Half Marathon Day. The registration fee is €25, with everyone who completes the event receiving a medal.

2. The Calorie Factory Challenge

When: January 11, 11:30pm

Where: Seatown Business Campus, Swords, Co Dublin

Not for the faint-hearted, this event runs throughout the night and into the following day, with female participants aiming to burn 5,000 calories, males aiming for 7,000 calories and trainers aiming to burn 10,000 calories in less than 24 hours.

3. Sugar Loaf 10km trail run

When: January 19, 10am-2pm

Where: Sugar Loaf, Co Wicklow

Tackle a different type of ‘sugar’ after Christmas by participating in a 10km run up and around the Sugar Loaf. Entry is €20 for early birds, and €25 thereafter.

4. Armagh ‘Beat the January Blues’ Marathon

When: January 6

Where: The Mall, Armagh

If looking for a last-minute event, Run Armagh has organised a full and half marathon and 10km race for this Sunday, January 6. Cost is £20 per ticket and registration is essential.
