Fleadh Cheoil Central: The world’s biggest festival of Irish music is live on TG4 this weekend

Expect a legendary weekend of Irish music as Fleadh 2022 returns to Mullingar, with Dáithí Ó Sé and Doireann Ní Ghlacáin presenting.

AFTER TWO YEARS away, the Fleadh is back and better than ever.

If you aren’t able to make the world’s biggest festival of Irish music in person, TG4 will be broadcasting live from the festivities in Mullingar. It all kicked off yesterday, Friday August 5th and is continuing through the evening of August 7th. TG4’s  ‘Fleadh Cheoil Central’ will be sharing live shows full of the very best of Irish song, music and dance.

Each evening, presenters Dáithí Ó Sé and Doireann Ní Ghlacáin will give viewers from around Ireland and around the world the play-by-play of the action from Fleadh 2022. This year, the Fleadh is returning to Mullingar, where it was first hosted back in 1951, which offered the inspiration for the theme of ‘Homecoming’.

The grand opening, broadcast on Friday evening on TG4, saw the festivities kick off with a new piece of music composed for the occasion. The Homecoming Suite was composed by Irish-American fiddle player Liz Carroll, the first American-born Irish traditional musician ever nominated for a Grammy and TG2 Gradam Ceoil award-winner for composition. The premier performance of the new piece will be performed by Carroll alongside the Fleadh Fiddle Orchestra.

Presenters Dáithí Ó Sé and Doireann Ní Ghlacáin have spent the last month traveling the country, meeting some of the incredible performers, musicians, dancers and singers who will be taking part in Fleadh 2022. This year’s TG4 live coverage will be interspersed with footage from these visits, bringing you behind the scenes into the lives of some of Ireland’s biggest talents.

Co-presenters Peadar O Goill and Maggie Carty will help showcase the performers, which include best Irish musical talent from all over Ireland, and beyond. These will include Martin Hayes, John Francis Flynn, Inni-K, Anúna, Liz Carroll, At The Racket, Kila, 3 On The Bund, and many more.
