Cold weather severely disrupts Dublin Airport as 143 flights cancelled

DAA confirmed the cancellations this evening.

LAST UPDATE | 9 Dec 2022

OVER 140 FLIGHTS into and out of Dublin Airport have been cancelled today as a result of the cold weather.

Severe weather causing difficulties for airlines attempting to de-ice planes have caused 69 flights out of Dublin Airport to be cancelled today, with significant delays also being seen.

Alongside outbound cancellations, 74 flights into Dublin Airport today have been cancelled.

DAA confirmed the cancellations this evening.

The disruption comes as snow fell in some areas of the country overnight, particularly in the east, with temperatures dropping as low as almost -5° Celsius.

Temperatures hit as low as -2.2°C at Dublin Airport last night.

A Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning remains in place nationwide until midday, with Met Éireann warning of hazardous conditions and icy surfaces.

In a statement, DAA media relations manager Graeme McQueen said that “while the runways and taxiways at Dublin Airport have remained open and fully operational for the entire day, some airlines experienced delays to their flight schedules due to difficulties de-icing their aircraft.

“Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest flight information,” McQueen added.

A spokesperson for Aer Lingus said:

“Our operation at Dublin Airport today has been significantly challenged due to circumstances outside of our control. Adverse weather conditions overnight have resulted in some delays and a small number of cancellations.

“While we still face challenges at Dublin Airport, our Ground Operations team continue to work hard to minimise any impact on customers. We advise customers to arrive to the airport and check in as normal.”

The Journal reporter Jamie McCarron, who is currently in Dublin Airport, says that his flight was initially due to take off at 2.05pm this afternoon but has since been delayed until 11.50pm tonight.

He said that the airport was facing “massive delays” with flights being both delayed and cancelled.

“We’re in limbo really because we don’t know if the flight is going to be cancelled,” McCarron said.

“There’s a real atmosphere of frustration here because a lot of people don’t know what’s going on. I still don’t know what’s going on.”

An example of a flight delay this morning was that of Aer Lingus flight EI562 from Dublin to Barcelona. This flight was due to depart at 7.15am and didn’t take off until 10.25am.

I suppose this is the DAA’s fault too.

@John Barry: Hope you all get in the air soon. If only there were regular updates and places to charge your phones, it would be less stressful all right.
(Put on a mask though, I’ve two friends down with Covid after a return flight where no one bothered.)

Out via Dublin Airport recently. Dirty and filthy. Everywhere from the road to the aircraft. Retail staff just don’t even know what country they’re in.
millions of others go through this.
Almost 3 hours waiting on a stand, after a 9 hour flight. Watching winter operations training outside the aircraft while families onboard contacted loved ones to say We’re parked on the new runway to allow other airlines taxi into non contact stands.
Plenty of stands vacant and not in use.
I simply hate having to fly anywhere but jaysus, can the Airport operator not get anything right.

Dubliners say they’re more than welcome to our share of the freezing fog, we’ve had enough of it on the east coast!
