Flooding in Cork City this afternoon Cork City Council

Cork city experiences flooding as seven counties under status yellow wind warning

The city council warned that this evening’s high tide will cause widespread flooding in low-lying areas.

LAST UPDATE | 7 Nov 2022

MET ÉIREANN HAS placed several counties under wind and rain warning as Cork city is experiencing flooding this evening due to persistent heavy rain.

Carlow and Kilkenny have been added to Met Éireann’s status yellow wind alert currently in place for Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow until 9pm, with the forecaster warning that “damaging” gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour are possible.

A status yellow rain warning is also in place for Galway and Kerry until tonight, with Co Down also flagged for a rain warning by the UK Met Office.

Cork City Council have also issued a flood warning today, stating:

“Following from yesterday’s flood warning, Cork City Council is advising the public to be extremely cautious as severe weather remains forecast for Cork City today, alongside warnings for high tides over the coming days which will cause localised flooding and disruption to traffic.”

The council earlier warned that this evening’s high tide at 4.48pm would cause widespread flooding in low-lying areas of Cork City, with associated impacts on traffic flow at this time.

The council this evening reported flooding on the Lower Glanmire Road, Wandesford Quay, Morrison’s Island, Father Matthew Street, Lavitt’s Quay and South Terrace.

However, all roads that were closed due to flooding have now been reopened, the council said shortly after 6.30pm.

Met Éireann warned earlier today that today’s rain was likely to lead to floods because soil was still waterlogged from rainfall during the latter half of last week.

Fire and road crews responded to incidents in Co Wexford on Thursday and flooding was also reported on the banks of the Shannon river on Friday.

Rain is predicted to turn more persistent through today, with an “ongoing risk of flooding,” Met Éireann said.

Met Eireann have forecast rain through the late afternoon, beginning to clear to showers from the southwest while winds will veer southwesterly and gradually ease somewhat.

Tonight should bring more scattered showers, with  some turning heavy or thundery.

Some milder rain is expected tomorrow with occasional sun.
