Florida teen recovering after being shot through head with spear

The spear was removed after three hours of surgery.

A FLORIDA TEENAGER is recovering in hospital after he was accidentally shot through the head with a spear by his friend during a fishing trip.

Doctors at the Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center said yesterday that it took three hours to remove the spear from the 16-year-old’s brain.was rushed to hospital earlier this month with about 36 inches (3 feet) of spear protruding from his head. The projectile was accidentally fired by his friend as he was loading a spear gun.

The spear entered his forehead about two inches above his right eye and went through the back of his skull. Part of the visible section of spear was cut off to allow the teen to undergo cranial scans.

Doctors at the Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center said yesterday that it took three hours to remove the spear from the 16-year-old’s brain.

The spear passed through the right hemisphere of his brain, missing major blood vessels, and doctors believe he could make a close to full recovery, ABC News reports. Although he does not remember the incident, the teenager has woken from his surgery and has spoken a few words.
