Allergic to shellfish, eggs or gluten? Good news

Restaurants now have to tell you what’s in their food.

NEW LAWS AROUND the labelling of food in restaurants, cafes and takeaways come into effect today.

As of today, customers will have to be told if their food contains any of 14 allergens. This includes in the production or preparation of the food.

The regulations say that businesses will have to provide the details in a written format.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland says that food businesses should pay attention to how food is prepared and what is in food that is bought in from outside.

The full list of allergens that fall under the new laws are:

  1. Cereals containing gluten
  2. Crustaceans
  3. Eggs
  4. Fish
  5. Peanuts
  6. Soybeans
  7. Milk
  8. Nuts
  9. Celery
  10. Mustard
  11. Sesame seeds
  12. Sulphur dioxide
  13. Lupin
  14. Molluscs
