MANCHESTER CITY OWNER Sheikh Mansour has returned to the top of British football’s rich list, released today by FourFourTwo.com and Leaders in Football.
The personal wealth of the member of the Emirati royal family is estimated to have risen £3 billion to £20 billion.
Mansour, also the deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, moves ahead of last year’s leader Lakshmi Mittal- a benefactor at Queens Park Rangers. Mittal, an Indian steel magnate, is now estimated to be worth £17 billion- a drop of £18.4 billion on last year.
Roman Abramovich slips to fourth place- his lowest ranking since entering English football in 2003, with a personal wealth of £7.3 billion. Arsenal backer Alisher Uzmanov has overtaken Abramovich thanks to rising metal prices.
Denis O’Brien (£1.87 bn) is seventh in the list as backer of Celtic, with the Liebherr family (Southampton owners) sit in fifth. Also in the top ten are Joe Lewis (Tottenham), Stanley Kroenke (Arsenal), the Glazer family (Man. United) and Bernie Ecclestone (QPR).
The list also details the richest managers and players in British football. David Beckham is by far the wealthiest player with a personal wealth of over £100 million. Manchester United striker Michael Owen is the second richest- but his wealth is just 40 per cent of Beckham’s.
Wayne Rooney’s wealth has dropped by 12 million over the last year, meaning the England striker drops out of the top five. Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell and Ryan Giggs complete the top five.
Fabio Capello is still Britain’s richest manager, with an estimated wealth of £36 million. Roy Keane is the second-richest manager in the British game, with £27 million. Most of Keane’s wealth comes from his playing career.
Sir Alex Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti and Arsene Wenger complete the top five.
