'The light floods in through the French doors': Lorna shares her bright self-designed kitchen

“Many said I was mad to change” the kitchen, recalls Lorna Pringle – “but it is now the area visitors admire the most”.

EACH WEEK, WE ask an Irish person with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

Lorna Pringle has lived in Straffan, Co Kildare with her husband and two-year-old daughter since September last year.

“We lived in the house for a few months and got a feel for how the space worked for us and then made a plan to rejig the downstairs layout,” says Lorna.

“I designed and drew up the plans for the new layout myself and we got a great builder on board to carry out the work. We moved in with my parents for two months while the work was being completed and moved back in just after Easter this year.”

This week, Lorna (@for.the.love.of.greige) chatted us through her favourite spot: her kitchen.

What do you love about this part of your home?

I love the light that now floods in through the beautiful French doors and the stunning kitchen that Kestrel Interiors created for us. This part of my home is the area many said I was mad to change back when I was drawing up plans for the new layout and kitchen, but it is now the area visitors admire the most.

What was your inspiration when you were putting the space together?

I get so much inspiration from both Instagram and Pinterest. The Instagram home community is such an inspiring place filled with friendly, creative people sharing ideas and tips – whether it’s self-builds, new builds or home renovations. I am constantly saving images I see online and taking photos when I’m out and about in showrooms. All of these things get my creative juices flowing and inspired the final design of this room.

Talk us through some of the objects in the photo.

The kitchen lights are the Shaftsbury Pendants by Neptune, and the barstools are the Suffolk Oak Barstools from Neptune by Global Village. The counters are quartz from Egan Stoneworks in Kilbeggan, which we brought up full height as a backsplash too.

The kitchen itself was designed and made by Kestrel Interiors, an amazing family run business based in Ballymahon, Co Longford.

How well does this photo reflect the rest of your home?

This photo is my vision come to life, with the help of a great builder and kitchen designer. Every part of this space is my style and I think it is a true reflection of what I am trying to inject into the rest of our home; bright, calm spaces through the use of the ‘greige’ tones I am known for.

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

Not an awful lot as we try to tidy as we go. I was very conscious of this when designing the layout and functionality of this space. All the small appliances and utensils that usually sit on a worktop are incorporated into my pantry behind closed doors. We also chose a floor and work surface that would be very forgiving and easily maintained.

Naturally, with a toddler running about and eating constantly, this kitchen is all-go by day. The island is always in use whether it’s preparing food or folding clothes, but we do try and make a conscious effort to ‘press the reset button’ as we refer to it and do a quick whip round once our daughter Emilia has gone down for the night.
