Four-year-old boy in a critical condition after Galway swimming accident

Two lifeguards at Leisureland, Salthill performed CPR on the child for 30 minutes after he got into difficulty in the water.

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy is fighting for his life after an accident at a Galway swimming pool.

The child, who has been named locally as Brendan Sweeney, got into difficulties at the busy Leisureland public pool in Salthill yesterday afternoon. Lifeguards spent half an hour trying to resuscitate the boy at the scene before he was taken to University Hospital Galway. He remains in a critical condition in ICU.

Leisureland chairman Donal Lyons told The Irish Independent that he’s satisfied that staff reacted accordingly to the incident. He says two lifeguards administered CPR while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. The Irish Daily Star reports that the boy was breathing when he was removed to hospital. Eight lifeguards were on duty yesterday afternoon, and gardaí are reviewing CCTV footage of the pool in an effort to establish what happened.
