Free public transport for children under nine and companions for over-70s

Previously, children up to the age of five were able to use public transport free of charge.

LAST UPDATE | 1 Oct

FREE ACCESS TO public transport will be available for children aged five to eight years old under transport measures in Budget 2025, while over-70s with a free travel pass will be able to bring a companion with them free of charge.

Previously, only children up to the age of five were able to use public transport free of charge.  Over 70s with a free travel pass could apply for a free companion pass if they passed an assessment, but now it will be available to everyone who falls into that group.

It’s understood that the annual cost of expanding free access for children is expected to be around €8 million.

Both the Green Party and Fianna Fáil have sought to take credit for the proposal, saying public transport has been a priority of this government.
