French fighter plane shoots down Libyan warplane

Reports state the single-engine military aircraft was quickly shot down.

A FRENCH FIGHTER has downed a Libyan warplane, according to new reports from Libya.

The Libyan jet was trying to violate the UN no-fly zone, according to the Tripoli Post.

It said that the single-engine military aircraft was quickly shot down.

ABC News first reported the incident, which was the first challenge to the no-fly zone from the Libyan side. It comes after five days of bombing runs against pro-Gaddafi positions.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe described coalition air strikes against Libya as a “success”.

NATO and EU leaders are discussing the ongoing Libyan action at special meetings today.
