Funeral to take place of Irishman found dead in police cell in Portugal

It’s understood the 29-year-old restaurant worker was being held in connection to an alleged attack on his partner.

THE FUNERAL IS to take place on Monday of the Irishman found dead in tragic circumstances in a police cell in Portugal.

Ryan Chan, from Letterkenny in Co Donegal, was found dead in his cell on September 11th following his arrest the previous night in Portugal’s Albufeira region.

It’s understood the 29-year-old restaurant worker was being held in connection to an alleged attack on his partner, as the couple visited the country for a wedding.

The victim of the knife attack, a woman aged in her 20s, was treated in hospital for her wounds and subsequently released.

Portugal’s military police force, the National Republican Guard, stated that an investigation is underway into the circumstances of Mr Chan’s death.

His remains have now been repatriated back to Ireland by the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, ahead of his funeral on Monday morning.

The death notice for Mr Chan said that he will be dearly missed by his loving partner Megan and their children Ezra and Eli, mother Frances, father Bobby and his wife Yvonne, brother Connor, grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours.

Ryan’s remains will be reposing at his mother Frances’ home at 4 Kiltoy Court, Letterkenny F92 C8DP on Saturday 21st September from 4pm until 10pm and on Sunday 22nd September from 12 noon until 10pm with Rosary both nights at 9pm.

His funeral will take place on Monday 23rd September at 10.15am going to the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Ballyraine, Letterkenny at 11am with interment afterwards in Conwal cemetery.
