We need your help now

Support from readers like you keeps The Journal open.

You are visiting us because we have something you value. Independent, unbiased news that tells the truth. Advertising revenue goes some way to support our mission, but this year it has not been enough.

If you've seen value in our reporting, please contribute what you can, so we can continue to produce accurate and meaningful journalism. For everyone who needs it.

Open thread: What's the funniest mistake you ever made?

We want to hear all of your embarrassing stories.

THERE’S A VERY simple reason for having a backspace button on a keyboard.

We all make mistakes from time to time.

It could be as awkward as putting petrol in your diesel hire car or just waving to someone who wasn’t actually greeting you in the first place.

Today though, we want to celebrate the mistakes that you can look back on now and laugh at. The ones that still cause you to go red in the cheek but also bring a wry smile to your face.

To prove you’re not alone, we asked some people in Journal Media Towers to — anonymously — submit their own:

I was Facebook stalking some girl I knew through friends, but not even particularly well, back when I was like 15. I was lying down in bed on my laptop and my hand sort of jogged and my finger slipped. And I tagged myself in her cover photo. Her cover photo was a photo of herself and her friend and I tagged myself as the friend. It wasn’t even her first cover photo – it was something like third or fourth. We weren’t friends on Facebook.”

During history class back in secondary school, I was daydreaming, as you do in history and I saw this thing run across the floor. I got such fright and screamed ‘MOUSE MOUSE’ and the whole class looked over. The teacher walked over to the mouse, but it wasn’t a mouse, it was a €2 coin that fell out of someone’s pocket and rolled along the floor. That week in school was awful.”

I told Paul from the Frank and Walters I didn’t understand why people did the line-up on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, as they were basically admitting their career was done. Imagine my delight to see him in the lineup two months later. I nearly died.”
