GRAIN SHIPMENTS FROM Ukraine resumed today after Russia quickly returned to a deal allowing their safe passage following international pressure as the G7 club of rich nations vowed not to let Russia inflict “starvation” on Ukrainians.
But Moscow said it had yet to decide whether to extend the grain deal beyond 19 November – the renewal date written into the original agreement brokered by the UN and Turkey to stave off a global food emergency.
Moscow also accused Britain of training Ukrainian forces in “sabotage operations” and helping them carry out a weekend attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet that prompted its withdrawal from the grain agreement.
“Such confrontational actions by the English… could lead to unpredictable and dangerous consequences,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
Britain and Ukraine have both denied the accusations as “false”, with Moscow’s suspension of the grain deal drawing global condemnation because of its impact on the developing world.
After Wednesday’s announcement that Russia was rejoining the deal, the UN said today that seven vessels were transiting through the Black Sea shipping corridor.
Ukraine is one of the world’s top producers and the Russian invasion had blocked 20 million tonnes of grain in its ports until the safe passage deal was agreed in July.
UN chief Antonio Guterres called for the deal’s renewal to reduce “the risk of hunger” worldwide.
‘Hope’ for deal extension
UN trade negotiator Rebeca Grynspan told reporters in Geneva today that she had “hope that the parties will be responsible and will extend and expand the Black Sea grain initiative”.
Russia has suffered a series of battlefield defeats in the last couple of months and Ukraine appears to have been behind a series of daring attacks deep behind Russian lines.

Moscow has retaliated with a wave of missile strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure which have caused widespread blackouts, raising concern about heating, power and water supplies this winter.
Ahead of today’s meeting of the Group of Seven industrialised powers, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said the G7 will help Ukraine with items including generators and heaters to survive the winter.
“We will not allow the brutality of this war to lead to masses of elderly people, children, young people and families dying in the coming winter months,” Baerbock said.
‘Words that Putin understood’
Ukraine said Russia’s return to the deal showed its weakness.
Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko denied Russian claims Kyiv had offered security guarantees, saying it had only reaffirmed those already in the deal.
“Ukraine has never endangered the grain route,” he said on Facebook, indicating Moscow had rejoined the agreement thanks to “active diplomacy” by the UN and Turkey.
“In coordination with Ukraine, they found words that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin understood,” he said.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday the resumption of the deal was “a significant diplomatic result for our country and the whole world”.
Negotiations also underway to unblock fertiliser exports from Russia have made “important steps forward”, Grynspan said, but acknowledged there was still a way to go.
Moscow has complained its grain and fertiliser exports continue to face issues over sanctions imposed after its invasion despite a July deal that called for sanctions to spare agriculture-related products.
Meanwhile, the UN’s IAEA nuclear watchdog said its inspectors had found no indications of any “undeclared nuclear activities” at three locations they had inspected in Ukraine.
The inspectors began looking at the sites on Monday at Kyiv’s request to refute Moscow’s allegations that Ukraine was preparing to use dirty bombs against Russian troops.

‘I feel less lonely’
Meanwhile some semblance of normality was gradually returning to areas of southern and eastern Ukraine recently recaptured by Ukrainian troops although the humanitarian situation remains fragile.
At a hospital in Izyum in eastern Ukraine, director Yuri Kuznetsov said a generator had been recently added and workers were gradually replacing shattered windows.
“We have about 200 patients today, compared with 50 in June,” the 52-year-old surgeon told AFP.
But in the village of Lymany in southern Ukraine, an aid volunteer said she was concerned that so many residents were returning despite the dangers.
“It would be a lot easier if these people were not out here,” said Yulia Pogrebna, 32, as she distributed food boxes to residents.
Natalia Panashiy, 54, a community leader, said: “Of course it is too early for them to be coming back.
“But I am glad that they are because now I feel less lonely out here.”

@Shayne O’Donoghue: what’s more sadder is that there is people /organizations out that defends them and makes excuses for them. by saying its society that causes people to behave in such a way! they are called do gooders.
This ‘lockdown’ is bringing into sharp focus the lack of respect and regard some people have for their fellow citizens and public property. it also isnt solely a Dublin problem, its country wide
@brendan fitzsimons: I’m just stating the facts, there is little point in complaining about lawlessness, when those advocating a more stringent law enforcement policy get demonised by the media and don’t get voted for by the electorate.
@Pat Coyne: bring back the old days when parents could actually chastise their kids.. I don’t mean bate the be janey out of them but a clip around the ear and a smack on the backside!!! That and of course common sense to ‘guide’ their kids not try to be their friend!
@Lydia McLoughlin: and while we’re at it can we bring back some kind of authority for the man of the house? I don’t mean bate the be janey out of the wife but a slap with an open hand. That would guide them not to over cook the dinner, be her husband not her friend.
@Conor McCabe: Or maybe we could make examples of the parents of law breaking children. We could make them do the time to fit the crime, or pay the fine…. I see where you’re coming from, but I also see where Lydia is coming from too. But if we just debate what’s needed instead of acting on it. Then the good guys out there will get pissed off being left behind.
@Pat Coyne: what a ridiculous statement. Authoritarians aren’t lawful. If they were, they would respect laws and constitutions that limit their power. Authoritarians are corrupt. Corruption doesn’t respect law. Authoritarians do not respect civil liberties. The most basic and fundamental laws. The middle east is full of authoritarian leaders. Is that the model you’re going for? Just a ridiculously uneducated statement.
@James Browne: still a few decent people and places left, unfortunately those degenerates are breeding with other degenerates exponentially and we’re paying their dole and childers allowance.
Is regrettable that the judiciary let these people off with a slap on the wrist. Understandable that the Garda couldn’t be bothered. All the more so when people know who they are.
@Dnom: good point. Why would a guard be bothered when they know a solicitor is just going to stand up, plead their innocents and milk the system dry by claiming legal aid.
@aidan mccormack: I know where you’re coming from but with that mindset there’s no incentive to do anything about anti social behaviour in this country. I’ve seen a lot of vandalism reported in my area over the past while and it’s sad to see it become normalised.
Do other countries have these $cumbags like we do? Spitting at gards, coughing in ministers faces, coughing in anyone’s face, vandalising things, treating humans and animals in a despicable way, just $cum. I’d have grabbed them by the scruff of the neck and thrown them in a cell.
@Anne:
Hard labour!
I’ve just come back from Perth and we visited Kings Park in the city. Huge park, overlooking the city, open 24/7 to the public, people come at night just to see the lights. Not a speck of dirt or litter anywhere!
I remarked to family members about the cleanliness, saying that it wouldn’t happen in Ireland!
“I’ve just come back from Perth and we visited Kings Park in the city. Huge park, overlooking the city, open 24/7 to the public, people come at night just to see the lights.”
Now we know where the next Covid hot-spot will be!
I was listening to RTÉ yesterday evening and in passing talk about emergency legislation still on the books from 1948 they said that flogging was still on the books…I would have no problem volunteering to wield the sally stick.
Mulhuddart is West County Dublin.. Duh!! Just because its under Fingal doesn’t make it North. We have enough shite credited to us without taking the Mulhuddart boyos on as well!!
Problem is we don’t take motoring crimes seriously in this country. The Gardai rarely prosecute the “minor” stuff, and the fines are tiny. Even if you kill somebody you’ll probably be let off with a driving ban which you can ignore, since if you’re caught it’s again, a tiny fine and a driving ban.
Imagine if a sniper was set up nearby and imagine what would follow. This kind of behaviour (sniping) is of course against the law and can’t be condoned.
A community only reaps what it sows. If parents have no respect for public property due to illegal dumping etc well then their off-springs are going to follow through to form.
Bad parenting and spongers.
When are we going to start cracking heads with these people? Driving through Dublin yesterday it’s startling how many scrumbags are roaming the streets with impunity.
