GAA nominated for European Union's 'citizens prize'

The sporting body is up for an award for bodies that try to create closer integration across international borders.

THE GAA has been nominated for a European Union award aimed at recognising bodies that create closer integration across international borders.

The body will be Ireland’s nominee for the ‘European Citizen’s Prize’ this year.

The prize, which has been awarded every year since 2008, is given to citizens or organisations which contribute to better mutual understanding between people living in different EU member states, and helps to integrate the people of those states.

The GAA was nominated for the prize by Seán Kelly of Fine Gael, one of Ireland’s 12 MEPs and a former president of the association, and was selected to go forward by a national jury.

The GAA’s nomination is intended to mark its work in uniting people on either side of the Northern Irish border and to foster greater understanding between people resident in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

50 individuals and organisations receive the prize every year.

A chancellery of MEPs, chaired by European Parliament vice-president Anni Podimata, will choose this year’s winners next month.
