Post-mortem due on woman (60s) who died after two dogs attacked her

It’s understood the woman was visiting relatives in Moycullen when the incident occurred.

GARDAÍ ARE INVESTIGATING the death of a woman who died after being attacked by two dogs yesterday afternoon.

It’s understood that the woman, aged in her mid 60s, was visiting relatives at their home in Moycullen Co Galway, when two bullmastiffs attacked her.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident after 3pm yesterday afternoon. The woman was pronounced dead at scene and her body has since been removed to University Hospital Galway.

Gardaí said that a post-mortem examination is expected to take place over the coming days.

RTÉ reports that the dogs have been put down.

Suggestions for change

The Social Democrats are calling for a review of dog control laws following the incident.

The party’s Galway representative Niall Ó Tuathail claimed that “the rate of hospitalisations from dog bites has been rising for the past few decades” and that this meant

“The evidence says that you need to educate owners and place restrictions on any dog that shows signs of aggressive behaviour, rather than just controlling certain breeds and only in public places.

“Ireland has almost four times the rate of dog bite hospitalisations compared to Netherlands where they take this wider approach.”
