What shocks the life out of me is that they then get FREE legal aid and then their solicitor applies and gets them bail and they are out straight away to do the same again in a day or two. A complete mockery of the “justice” system.

Some criminals have over 100 previous convictions. imagine that. All the trouble and expense the guards have gone through 100 times. does anybody believe the judges are told by the government to be over lenient as prisons are overcrowded?

You’ve Mary Robinson to thank for that. I agree with Free Legal Aid up to a 3 strike rule. After 3 strikes no one is that unfortunate, pay yourself. This is unlikely to change though as it’s keeping solicitors in their cushy salaries and they’ll fight tooth and nail to keep it.

@Paul. I was responding to a comment complaining about free legal aid. Mary Robinson was the barrister in the winning case against the government for free legal aid. Nothing negative, just a fact.

The culprit will looking for compo from the soft hearted judge and will get it. Should be banned driving for 10 years and have his car sold and the proceeds give to the victims of crime.

Revolving door system suits judges and solicitors alike, both get paid by the state for the case in front of them. A 100 time repeat offender will cost us three times that as we pay costs for gardai, solicitors and judges each time an offence is committed, free legal aid is granted and it is brought before the courts

There should be fixed charges for all of these offences without having to go to court and waste peoples time.

I’d say there needs to me more than fixed charges. The cost of car insurance would probably be greater than this fixed charge. Meaning people would be willing to risk not paying insurance and just settle for the fixed charge.

Dangerous driving cannot be dealt with by a fixed charge, and that’s despite the fact that a fixed charge can still end up in court if the fine isn’t paid.

@Alan Scott: He said good night to the Garda as he drove on after refusing to take the breath test. claiming do you know who I am. He also never produced Dail Bar receipts which could have so easily cleared his name. But alas as he was coming from the Dail he could legally drink anyway. Did he do a runner?
