Want to be a Garda? You better get your application in today

The deadline for applications closes at midnight tonight.

IF YOU HAD your sights set on being a member of an Garda Síochána then you better get your application in today.

The recruitment of new gardaí was suspended for several years as part of the public sector hiring freeze, but was reopened last month by the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter is what he described as an important step for the force.

Recruitment

Since the recruitment opened approximately 20,000 people have applied for positions in An Garda Síochána. There are believed to be between 250 and 300 positions available.

Speaking about the level of applications, the Immigrant Council said that it shows a “real opportunity for a diverse force”.

Denise Charlton, Chief Executive of the Council said that “An Garda Síochána is committed to creating a police service that is fully representative of all Ireland’s diverse communities. An equal opportunities employer, it actively encourages applications from members of all segments of Irish society”.

She urged recruiters to ensure their campaign is actively promoted amongst migrants and minorities and the Immigrant Council is encouraging anyone with an interest in a career in policing to apply.

Got what it takes?

If you think you are right for the job, there is still time the deadline for getting applications in is midnight tonight.

The gardaí are looking for people who are:

  • Of good character
  • To be of good health, of sound constitution and fitted physically and mentally to perform the duties of a member of the Service.
  • Passed a Physical Competence Test.
  • Be 18 years of age but not yet 35 years of age on midnight of the closing date for the competition
  • Be a national of a European Union Member State or a national of a European Economic Area State or the Swiss Confederation; or Be a Refugee under the Refugee Act, 1996 or have had a period of one year‟s continuous residence in the State on the closing date of the advertisement for the competition
  • Have obtained an Irish Leaving Certificate with a grade D3 minimum in five subjects at ordinary level, ora Level 5 Certificate (Major award) on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), or a qualification that, in the opinion of Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is of a standard in terms of both level and volume of learning that is not lower than the standard of the qualification specified above.
  • You must also have a proven proficiency in two languages, one of which must be Irish or English.
