A MAN WHO was shot and seriously injured in the 2012 attack on Real IRA leader Alan Ryan is pursuing legal action against An Garda Síochána in relation to developments after the incident.
Proceedings were issued in the High Court on 24 July 2017.
Aaron Nealis was left disabled after the shooting incident in Dublin on 3 September 2012 in which Ryan was killed. While in hospital receiving treatment, the Sligo man was told by gardaí that his life was also under threat and was formally served with a Garda Information Message (GIM).
Nealis is now alleging that criminal gangs “were conspiring to have him killed”.
He says he made a number of submissions to Gsoc and met with senior gardaí in 2015. He is suing the gardaí for alleged misfeasance in public office.
Recently, Nealis says he’s been made aware of threats to him and his family’s lives from “criminal elements”. Solicitors for Nealis say they have yet to receive a “meaningful response” on their client’s safety from gardaí.
In a statement, they said:
“In light of these circumstances we have been instructed to issue High Court proceedings in an attempt to expose the flaws of Gardaí.”
A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told TheJournal.ie that ”as legal proceedings are pending it would not be appropriate for us to comment”. A spokesperson for Gsoc said, ”As it appears that this matter is to go before the courts, it would be inappropriate for GSOC to comment.”
