A garda van burst into flames on a busy motorway

Gardai believe a technical problem led to the incident on the M7 in Kildare.

A garda van caused traffic disruption this afternoon when it went it burst into flames on the busy M7 motorway in County Kildare.

Gardaí were transferring a prisoner to a court hearing at the time of the incident which happened on the road between Monasterevin and Kildare.

A garda spokesman confirmed the incident and said he believed a technical problem had caused the fire.

Eye witnesses said fire brigades and garda cars blocked the road for a short time earlier today.

The gardaí and the prisoner escaped from the vehicle unharmed and the van was later removed from the scene.
