Enda: Templemore will never close again

The Taoiseach had a great time meeting new Garda recruits today.

THE TAOISEACH HAS said that the Garda training college in Templemore will not close again.

Enda Kenny made the comments while speaking at a ceremony for 100 new recruits at the facility today.

He said the Government has placed “firm emphasis on strong and efficient policing” despite “the economic crisis we inherited”.

“That’s why we have set-up a high-level group to plan for investment in upgrading Garda technology to meet 21st Century realities and demands. That’s why we opened up this College. It won’t close again.”

200 new recruits began training at Templemore in Tipperary last year and An Garda Síochána is currently seeking more candidates.

It follows a four-year recruitment freeze, with the last batch of gardaí graduating from Templemore in 2011.

Tackling crime

Kenny told the latest recruits they will help provide “a hugely important public service, policing our cities, towns and villages, preventing and detecting crime, bringing criminals to justice and protecting the Irish public”.

The demanding nature of modern policing means that An Garda Síochána, like any police force, needs the energy and vitality of young recruits.

The Taoiseach said that the new training programme at Templemore is “designed to be more relevant to the real-life challenges recruits will face when they leave the college”.

Kenny added that €10 million will be spent on 400 new Garda vehicles this year, while Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerals is set to introduce a DNA database that “will help transform serious crime investigations and deter criminals”.

370 new cars and vans are on their way to the gardaí

It would be easy for the journal to use a generic map of the Island and to report the official Met UK forecast for the north east of the island. The approach of using this map is antagonistic and somewhat juvenile. Most likely in the interest of stirring up engagement. I’m a Nationalist, from Kildare, and this image insults a lot of people. Yes it’s the official blah blah, but use your common sense man. Don’t be a so and so.

@Dave O’Keeffe: so nobody from the North Eastern part of Ireland, living in either the Republic or the North, read the journal or are interested in the weather in the North? Nobody crossing the border on a daily basis wants to know about storm or weather conditions in the six counties? And you profess common sense??

@Dave O’Keeffe: if you read what I said, I suggested they use Met Eireann or Met UK forecasts so that they could report correctly for people from that part of Ireland that would be concerned about the forecasts for their region.

@Dave O’Keeffe: where do RTE get their forecasts for the North, and why do they forecast for the North, common sense I’d imagine. The authors and graphics people here do this so that folk like us will get into a barney. But for me, I’d like to know how Derry is going to fare, as I have family there. Should I have to go to the BBC for that? RTE the national broadcaster realise that this would be a commercial mistake. The journal prefer to have muppets arguing.
