Gardaí uncover firearms and suspicious devices after stop and search

The discovery was made earlier this evening in Co Laois.

A GARDAÍ STOP and search operation this evening has uncovered a weapons stash in Co Laois.

This happened shortly before 6pm when a vehicle was was pulled over on the M7 near to Mountrath.

A firearm and a number of suspicious devices were uncovered in a search.

The Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit has been asked to attend the scene, which is currently cordoned off.

Two men were arrested at the scene, one in his 40s and the other in his late teens.

Both are currently being held under the Offences against the State Act 1939 at Portlaoise Garda Station. 

The investigation is ongoing.
