Gardai and PSNI looking for man who stole Garda car

Man arrested on drink driving suspicion manages to commandeer Garda car, drive it to Co Down and escape.

GARDAI HAVE CONFIRMED that they are working with the PSNI to catch a man who stole a Garda patrol car, drove it across the Border and abandoned it in Co Down.

The man had been arrested in Lusk, Co Dublin last night at around 9pm and breathalysed. Gardai then put him in the car to take him to Balbriggan Garda station by Garda car on suspicion of drink driving. However, the man somehow managed to take control of the car en route to the station when he was left alone in the car and drive it in the direction of Belfast.

Gardai said that they could not offer more details on the incident but confirmed that the car was found abandoned in Hilltown, Co Down and that the man had yet to be apprehended.

The PSNI also confirmed to TheJournal.ie this morning that they are assisting in the search for the man but that the case was being spearheaded by the Garda Siochána.
