Man killed and two gardaí injured in Galway crash

The incident happened shortly after 12.30am last night.

GARDAÍ ARE INVESTIGATING after a man was killed and two gardaí injured in a collision outside Galway.

The incident happened on the N18 around 2 km outside Galway on the Ardrahan side shortly after 12.30am this morning.

A 66-year-old man was fatally injured after being hit by the car, which also collided with a parked garda car.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene before being taken to University Hospital Galway.

Both gardaí – who were outside the car at the time – were also taken to University Hospital Galway with injuries described as non-life threatening. Both remain in hospital.

The driver of the first car, a man in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and taken to Gort Garda Station, from where he has since been released.

The stretch of the N18 where the accident happened is currently closed to allow an examination to take place by the Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. 

Local diversions are in place.
