THE NINE-YEAR-OLD GIRL who died in Saturday’s multiple shooting in Tucson, Arizona, was one of the children born in the US on September 11, 2001, chosen to appear in a book called Faces of Hope.
Christina Taylor Green was one of six people shot dead by a single gunman during an attempt to assassinate US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
One man, 22, has been charged in relation to the attack.
Green’s mother Roxanna told Fox News that her daughter was aware of the significance of her birthday and said she couldn’t “express the devastation and hurt and how we were so robbed of our beautiful, beautiful princess”. Politico reports that Roxanna Green refused to state what she thought should happen to the shooting suspect, but her husband said the person responsible should be executed.
He said it was a waste of dollars to do anything other than kill that person.
Green’s grandfather, former manager of the Phillies baseball team Dallas Green, thanked people for their support following the tragedy, but said he will never recover from her death. Philly.com reports that he and his wife Sylvia released a statement saying:
This is such a tough time for Sylvia and I, and for John and Roxanna and little Dallas. We thank everybody from the bottom of our hearts for their friendship, thoughts, and prayers, especially the Phillies and our extended family in baseball.
Somehow we will get through this, but right now our little 9-year-old granddaughter is not here, and we’re having a hard time with that.
Roxanna Green told MSNBC that Christina attended Giffords’ event because she was interested in politics and had recently been elected by her schoolmates to their student council:
