Glenroe had every Irish person panicking about their homework last night

*Glenroe theme music starts* I HAVEN’T DONE MY GEOGRAPHY!

gelnroe1 RTÉ RTÉ

LAST NIGHT, RTÉ aired Well Holy God It’s Glenroe, a one-off special looking back at the legendary soap.

The show featured recollections from cast and crew, including Mary McEvoy (that’s Biddy to you) and the show’s creator Wesley Burrowes.

And it brought memories of Sunday nights flooding back.

Just hearing the theme music again sent shivers up the nation’s spine

Irish people were reminded of the weekly “I haven’t done my homework!” panic

Getting to watch Glenroe without the fear of school tomorrow? Priceless

glenroe2 RTÉ RTÉ

Meanwhile, we were reminded of this infamously steamy moment…

“Em, who wants tea?”

And Mario Rosenstock’s turn as an impossibly youthful doctor turned a few heads…

mario RTÉ RTÉ

That’s not to say some people weren’t confused by the whole thing…

Afterwards, it was clear that the Irish people wanted one thing and one thing only: for RTÉ to bring back Glenroe

Do it, RTÉ

Why can RTE not show all of the episodes again from season 1. It would be great to see them again.

Because they have no respect for their archive and no clue or desire in how to manage it. Judging from the variety of clips featured, I imagine the full complement of episodes exist. I know Bracken is fully extant in the archives but that’s also ignored.

If Glenroe was a British series then you’d have multiple re-runs and if it was made by ITV, then Network Distributing (www.networkonair.com) would have released the lot on DVD by now.

But because it’s made by RTE then a documentary or inclusion on a clipshow is as good as it’ll get.

PS – IMHO Murphy’s Micro Quiz-M, which preceded Glenroe on Sundays from 1983 – 1987, was much better than Where In The World.

Shame if it is the case that they no longer have these episodes. ITV did the same though with most of Crossroads episodes.

About 1,700 of 4,500 Crossroads episodes exist; most of them from 1982 – 1988. Network have released a 41 disc set containing all surviving episodes up to 1979. Certainly a lot better than what RTE have done.

Thanks for the info Paul. As I understand most of the Riordans episodes are also gone. Do you notice that when RTE show films, they never give the year of the film as all other channels do.

I imagine the number of Riordans episodes is quite small. As the series was never sold internationally and predates the home video era (ok it ran till 1979 but most Irish households didn’t get VCRs until the early 80s), there’s no prospect of any more being found.

All 12 episodes of Bracken are intact (it was repeated by Lifestyle channel in 1993 and TG4 in 1999) so that would be an ideal release if RTE could be bothered. Glenroe was also shown on ITV (primarily by UTV) so I imagine they could be relied on for back-ups if necessary.

When you say “never give the year” do you mean in the TV listings?

Yea on the tv listings and on the digital info, there is never any info on the year of the film made, which is not the case with the other channels.

Repeating Glenroe on daytime TV sounds like a great idea. I wonder if Enda will make it one of his election promises.

. Glenroe was well on the way out when they euthanised it. Of course Fair city was on during weeknights and had been going for ten or so years so it didn’t replace Glenroe.
