Project Ara

Google's 'make-it-yourself' smartphone has been delayed because of a major snag

It looks like it’s not a fan of falling.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, Google announced its DIY smartphone, Project Ara, would be delayed until 2016 at the earliest as it worked out some problems.

The reasons for this were hinted at by Project Ara itself earlier, heavily suggesting that it was down to the ‘electropermanent’ magnets holding it together.

Instead of being a premade device, Project Ara allows users to swap out block-like modules into a smartphone frame, create their own custom device.

The idea is that users would be able to upgrade parts of a phone instead of buying an entirely new one.

How it did this was by using magnets so you could swap them out at a moment’s notice. However, when it was dropped, the magnets weren’t enough to hold them together.

The news is another setback for Google’s project. Earlier, it announced it wouldn’t be going through with its test launch in Puerto Rico as planned, and its launch wouldn’t happen until 2016.
