Google Doodle celebrates quantum physicist with an Irish connection

Erwin Schrödinger lived and worked in Dublin for seventeen years.

TODAY’S GOOGLE DOODLE remembers the man who gave his name to one of the most important equations in quantum physics which formed the basis of wave mechanics.

Prolific scientist Erwin Schrödinger was born on this date in 1887 and his birthday is being marked by the doodlers at Google.

The Austrian physicist was honoured with the Nobel Prize in 1933 after he formulated a wave-equation that gave the energy levels of atoms.

He is equally famous for another eponymous thought experiment, known as Schrödinger’s Cat, which questioned conventional interpretations of quantum mechanics and is featured prominently in Google’s home page today.

In 1940, on receipt of an invite from then-Taoiseach Éamon de Valera, Schrödinger moved to Dublin to help establish the Institute for Advanced Studies. He remained in the city for seventeen years before returning to his native Vienna on his retirement.

He became a naturalised Irish citizen in 1948 but retained his Austrian citizenship.
