Google brings its Nexus 5 smartphone to Irish shores

Both the Nexus 5 smartphone and Nexus 7 tablet are now available to purchase through the Google Play store.

Updated: 18:50pm

GOOGLE HAS QUIETLY made its Nexus 5 smartphone available in Ireland, more than four months after it was released.

Previously, those who wanted to order the Nexus 5 would have to do it through Amazon, but the company has made an unlocked version of its 16GB and 32GB smartphone available to Irish customers.

The Nexus 5 includes Android 4.4 (KitKat), a 4.95 inch screen and a 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. The 16GB and 32GB version cost €349 and €399 respectively.

The Nexus 7 Tablet, which has been available here in 2012, has similar memory and costs €229 and €269 for the wifi-only version. An unlocked LTE version of the 32GB Nexus 7 is also available for €349.

In the US, the Google Play store sells a number of devices outside of the Nexus range like its Chromebook range, Google Play editions of LG, Sony Samsung and HTC smartphones and Chromecast, a device which allows users to stream from their laptop, smartphone or tablet to their TV.

Google made the Nexus 5 available in 20 countries today including Ireland, Sweden, Portugal and Austria. The company also made the Chromecast, a device which allows users to stream from their laptop, smartphone or tablet to their TV, available in eleven countries including the UK.

Google has said it has no plans to add any additional devices, including Chromecast, to the Irish store.
