Talks on flags and parades begin in Belfast today

Former US diplomat Richard Haass is seeking a deal before Christmas.

CROSS-PARTY DISCUSSIONS aimed finding a compromise on the issues of flags, parades and the past begin today in Belfast.

Former US diplomat Richard Haass, along with Harvard professor Meghan O’Sullivan, is believed to want a deal on the issues before Christmas.

All five of the North’s major parties will be represented at the talks, which have focused on some of the most sensitive and contentious issues in the country.

The flying of flags, which led to riots and protests, is one such issue. Haass had suggested a new flag for the country, but that idea has been shelved.

Haass has produced a third set of draft proposals, tweeting early this morning that yesterday had been a “long day”.

The SDLP negotiator in the talks, Alex Atwood, said that victims of The Troubles “deserve the best efforts of all parties”.
