271st anniversary of Handel's Messiah marked in Dublin

Our Lady’s Choral Society performed ‘Messiah on the Street’ onDublin’s Fishamble Street, where it was first performed in 1742.

DUBLIN’S CULTURAL QUARTER celebrated the 271st anniversary of the first performance of Handel’s Messiah earlier today, which was first performed on Dublin’s Fishamble Street.

Our Lady’s Choral Society (OLCS) performed ‘Messiah on the Street’ in the Old City area of Temple Bar, ahead of tomorrow’s free celebration concert in The Church of Adam & Eve, Merchant’s Quay.

Starting at 6.30pm, the OLCS will perform the free concert in aid of the Merchant’s Quay Project and Focus Ireland.

Speaking at today’s event, Lord Mayor of Dublin Naoise Ó Muirí said that the streets of the old city in Temple Bar provided “the perfect setting for this annual historic day of fun for all the family.”

“Handel definitely picked the best city in the world to premier his most famous piece and it’s great to see the on-going appreciation for this beautiful musical work,” he said.

obviously the Dublin Lord Mayor made a mistake, if the premier of “The Messiah” took place in the best city in the world that would obviously be Cork.

Basically, Handel’s “Messiah” is a misconceived work of praise for an outdated skyfairy whose followers are discriminating against the LGBT community and helping to keep the working classes oppressed. It only helps to indoctrinate feeble minds into belief in religion which Marx rightly described as the opium of the people. What should be done is to re-write the lyrics to eliminate all references to belief in the Christian skyfairy and to substitute them with songs of praise for Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens etc who have shown us the road to enlightenment.

Dave, if you don’t like it then don’t go. Is the world so small that you can’t find a pocket of land with similar people to yourself where you can all rewrite what you like and praise yourselves there? Many people who are not religious come along to hear how a group of multi-denomination people can use their gift of singing or playing an instrument to create a sound that is very pleasing.
