Old meets new at this architecturally-designed family home in Co Kilkenny

Hawthorne Cottage is just 5km from Kilkenny city.

THE NAME HAWTHORNE Cottage might conjure up images of a thatched roof and barn-style doors that open out to a wild garden in the middle of a wood.

But on Waterford Road, just 5km from Kilkenny city is this contemporary five-bed home that’s a break away from a traditional Irish dwelling.

Indeed, the term cottage is misleading for a place that spans 255 m², but the name hasn’t been plucked from thin air. Originally a smaller home, the current owners weaved the new with the old beautifully to create an energy efficient and light-filled modern home.

Designed by Mark Kennedy Architecture, this thoughtful family home has been built to make the most of the daylight – it hits throughout the property ensuring no place is left in the dark.

Through the front door, you’re met with a porch and another more contemporary glass door that brings you to the hallway, home to solid timber floors and concrete staircase to the first floor.

The kitchen is large and filled with light. The appliances and finishes, from the induction hob to the white stone quartz counters, are high-end and integrated, while a central island makes this a very social space, too.

We’d hazard a guess that every keen cook dreams of a walk-in pantry and this might just be an ideal one. It has plenty of shelving to keep clutter out of the kitchen. And it gets better – beside the pantry is a plumbed utility room that has loads of storage that matches the teal blue presses in the kitchen and a stainless steel sink.

There are two large rooms on the ground floor, which would make ideal living rooms. This green one with straight timber floors has access to the outdoors and soaks up the views.

The door from this living room leads to the other reception room. Part of the original cottage, it was completely renovated and the first floor was removed. It now functions as an impressive front room with high vaulted ceilings, timber floors in a herringbone pattern and double glass doors that lead to the outside.

A trip up the concrete staircase will bring you to the landing which has two large windows overhead. The first of the double bedrooms is bright and fitted with large wardrobes.

The largest bedroom has an inner hallway that has wardrobes and plenty of storage fitted wardrobes and storage. There is an en suite shower room connected to this room that fully-tiled and ready-to-go.

To the front of the house, there are two further double bedrooms that both have built-in wardrobes. The fifth bedroom resides downstairs and has its own bathroom.

The bathrooms are another noticeable feature of Hawthorne Cottage, each one embraces its own colour and style while being well-finished.

The back garden needs work but it is spacious and has a lot of scope if landscaping, additional structures and outdoor seating areas are on the horizon.
