Head of Irish Boxing Association steps aside following sexual assault allegations

It was reported recently that Gerry O’Mahony was charged with sexual assault last year.

THE PRESIDENT OF the Irish Athletic Boxing Association has stepped aside from his role after recent media reports revealed that he was charged with sexual assault last year.

The Irish Examiner reported that Gerry O’Mahony was charged with sexual assault last May, at a sitting of Dungarvan District Court in Waterford.

The charge against O’Mahony alleges that he sexually assaulted a woman in Dungarvan on a date unknown between 1 January, 2009, and 31 December, 2010.

The paper also reported that the case was forwarded to the Circuit Criminal Court for trial by jury and a trial date of 2 July has been set.

In a statement yesterday, the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) said it “has only just become aware of the subject matter of recent media articles naming Gerry O’Mahony and his involvement in legal proceedings”.

The statement added that O’Mahony had volunteered to “step aside from discharging the duties of the President of the IABA, pending the resolution of those matters”.

This includes all domestic and international functions, such as attending the upcoming Paris Olympics as an IABA ambassador.

The IABA added: “We are mindful of each person’s presumption of innocence and shall be making no further media comment on this matter which is now before the Courts”.
