“SURE DON’T THEY have a job to do too” — Michael Healy-Rae’s resigned-sounding response to TheJournal.ie when asked for the family’s thoughts about Tv3′s upcoming fly-on-on the wall documentary on Kerry’s preeminent political dynasty.
The one-off programme was announced as part of the commercial broadcaster’s new season yesterday, with the promotional material promising to offer an entertaining insight into the lives of TD Michael, councillor Danny and retired patriarch Jackie:
“Whether it’s out sharing Michael’s passion for shooting, watching Jackie enjoy his retirement, or pulling pints in the family pub with Danny, there’s never a dull moment with the Healy Rae family.
“In this one-off documentary, Midweek’s Ciara Doherty spends a couple of weeks living in South Kerry with the Healy Rae’s as they go about their daily lives politically and socially.”
In the wake of the Ballymount launch, rumours began circulating that the family weren’t happy with the final edit, and had been attempting to have TV3 pull it from the schedule.
Michael put us straight: “No, sure let it go out. Why wouldn’t it go out?”.
Asked about speculation that the family were’t happy how they were depicted, the Kerry South deputy said it was the first he’d heard, calling the story “more Dublin media bullshit”, adding:
Sure what would be wrong with it? Why would people think it was something bad?Let the programme go out and let the people of Kerry see it, and let Ireland see it – and I’m sure the Dublin media will have plenty to say about it, like they always do.
And if that wasn’t clear enough, Healy-Rae says the media can feel free to “twist it whatever way they like!”
