Gardaí seize €700,000 worth of heroin and cannabis in Co Meath

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.

THREE MEN HAVE been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking after Gardaí seized heroin, tablets and cannabis with an estimated value of €700,000.

An “ongoing intelligence-led” operation by the Organised Crime Unit and National Bureau of Criminal Investigations led Gardaí to Rathkenny, Co Meath yesterday afternoon.

At around 3.30 pm they arrested three men – aged 31, 35 and 44 – and seized an amount of cannabis at the scene.

Follow-up searches led to the discovery and seizure of heroin, tablets and cannabis herb and resin, along with a large sum of cash.

Yesterday’s operation is part of an investigation into the sale and supply of drugs in north-east Leinster.

The three men arrested are currently being detained at Kells and Navan Garda stations.

sad that cannabis and heroin are sold by the same people ……..oh well. it’s the government’s choice to keep things they way they are even though it’s obvious to everyone that weed should be 100% legal for both recreational and medicinal use..

While I’m glad they took some heroin off the street, I cant help but feel that seizures such as these just illustrate that the alleged “gateway” effect of cannabis is caused due to prohibition. Cannabis and heroin shouldn’t be used in the same sentence let alone sold by the same people. Legalize cannabis and this connection is broken, leading to safer consumption and money into the government which hopefully would be put back into the people and out of the hands of criminals.

They’re not even intercepting 25% of what comes in, and half these guys will get suspended sentences, automatic remission etc
Total decriminalization would be a disaster so I see two policy options:

Option A: A smarter drug war.
    -Decriminalize Use
-Legalize recreational drugs and have them sold in specialist centres
-Keep nonrecreationals like heroin illegal, with life imprisonment without parole for any involvement with them at all.

Option B: End the drug war totally.
-Have specialized centers sell them all with controls
-Gangland crime would collapse, 80% of it’s funding would vanish overnight.

In C and B have the state license a company, for a fixed fee every year, run the centres, with all profits retained by the state and funding free treatment services for everyone alongside an education programme ran by ex-addicts.

Even with Options B and C, eventually someone using the legal drugs will die, state regulation of dosage and contents will reduce deaths but they will still happen, so to prevent all the heat from falling on any one minister/party etc the public should be the one to make this decision in an ordinary referendum, this is a decision we need to make as a society and take collective responsibility for.

Apologies. Yes I agree anyway. Would prefer option B myself with the a zero tolerance towards consumption or being under the influence in public places.
