HIQA questions breast cancer care at Cork University Hospital

A number of ‘governance and operational management issues’ exist at Cork University Hospital’s Breast Clinic, according to HIQA’s review.

A NUMBER OF issues surrounding the management of breast cancer care have been identified at Cork University Hospital (CUH), RTÉ reports.

The review by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has outlined ”several governance and operational management issues” in the hospital, which is Munster’s largest.

The structure of the Symptomatic Breast Disease Service’s governance group needs to be addressed, according to the review.

The absence of of the Clinical Director from meetings with representatives from the National Cancer Treatment Programme is noted in the report.

The report also adds that effective in-patient access processes and arrangements relating to consultant surgeons’ off-site emergency on-call commitments should be risk-assessed as a matter of urgency.

However, the report also notes that CUH has taken steps to address quality and safety issues during an assessment earlier this year.
