Drummer for Declan Nerney killed in hit-and-run incident in Florida

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

MARTIN JAMES O’CONNOR, the drummer with Irish musician Declan Nerney’s band, has been named as the person killed in a hit-and-run accident in Florida.

It was reported he was allegedly hit by a BMW car while crossing the street with two friends in the early hours of Saturday morning. The BMW fled the scene.

Shannonside FM reports that O’Connor (41), from Frenchpark in Co Roscommon was due to play with the band on board a cruise ship scheduled to leave Florida yesterday.

The two friends with the victim are also believed to be Irish.

Broward Sheriff’s Office arrested one man in connection with the incident.

Richard Jennings was arrested several hours after the accident and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident and have offered consular assistance to the family of the deceased.
