4 of a kind: Cosy homes across the country with stone fireplaces

House hunting in Monaghan, Clare, Kildare or Waterford?

FIREPLACES ARE FEW and far between when it comes to the newest developments and A-rated homes on the market right now. If you still enjoy cosying up to the warm glow of a real one, finding a home with a fireplace might be top priority.

This week, we’ve found four homes that make the fireplace a real feature by surrounding them in stone. Whether you’re hunting in Monaghan, Clare, Kildare or Waterford, here’s what’s on offer at the moment.

Scotstown, Co Monaghan – €335,000

Just 5 kilometres outside Monaghan town and close to Ballinode village sits this three-bed house. The rooms inside include the entrance hall that leads to the sitting room to the right and each of the three bedrooms and bathroom to the right. The kitchen is also accessed from the hall and opens into the bright dining area that makes the most of the countryside views. Two stone fireplaces, one in the sitting and one in the kitchen, anchor the spaces.

Of the three bedrooms, the largest has an en suite bathroom. The sleeping quarters and the social spaces flank a lobby that leads to the utility room and a storage area. While the main house has a floor area of 180 m², there is more space in the detached garage that is renovated and currently being used as a workshop and home office.

Donadea, Co Kildare – €850,000

This large four-bed, five-bathroom home in Kildare spans a generous 353 m² and stands on about two acres of land. The rooms inside consist of a hall that links to the living room, a kitchen and dining space, another family room and a conservatory. A utility room and a music room along with five bedrooms, four of which have en suite bathrooms, and a family bathroom complete the ground floor.

The house is approached by a gated entrance onto a large tarmac drive with loads of parking and plenty of lawns for the kids to play. And there is no shortage of space to play with. There is also a fenced paddock area and stables along with a large detached garage that’s the size of a comfortable house in its own right. Location-wise, this home is close to Timahoe village and Clane is about a 15 minute drive away.

Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare – €360,000

Mountain View is a spacious four bed in the west of Ireland. Spanning 241 m², this detached home stands on a large site close to Lisdoonvarna. Inside, the ground floor is made up of main reception room with a bay window overlooking the front garden and a centrepiece of the room is a full ceiling to floor cut stone chimney breast. Other social spaces include a separate dining room that links to the kitchen and then a sunroom that faces south.

A utility room and a bathroom along with one of the en suite bedrooms completes the ground floor. Upstairs, there are three more bedrooms that are all doubles and all have en suite bathrooms. Electric gates and a tarmac drive ensure total privacy. The grounds are landscaped and there is a paving area to the back for outdoor dining along with decorative rockeries, a water feature and raised beds for vegetables.

Dunhill, Co Waterford – €490,000

This large home in the Ballydermody area has a floor area of 247 m² and four bedrooms. Sitting on over five acres and just a short walk from Dunhill Village, the house dates to 1998. The rooms comprise a hall that leads to the open plan kitchen, dining room and lounge that has a utility room off it. This space is home to a redbrick fireplace with solid fuel stove inset. Two bedrooms and a bathroom complete the ground floor while two more sit upstairs.

To the side of the house is a large detached garage but also a detached American barn with six stables. There is plenty for young families in Dunhill village – a national school, a sports centre and a GAA pitch, and a pub while Waterford city is about 15 km away. For family days out, Copper Coast Mini Farm and plenty of beaches sit nearby.
