These are the words you used to describe homelessness

We asked readers earlier in the week and here’s the result.

AS PART OF TheJournal.ie‘s Homeless Ireland series this week, we asked all of you to get involved and share your insights into the homeless crisis.

On Monday, we featured an open thread, asking you to tell us the words that come to mind when you think of homelessness and of the people you see out on the streets.

The word cloud below shows the most commonly used words in the comments section of that article. What do you think?

Enough already. You’re not going to make people care, just go elsewhere.

Couldnt agree more, i wonder how many of the people that do ‘care’ have offered a room to a homeless person?

    Hey guys,

We’ve actually got a lot of feedback from readers on the series. Some who say they are going to look into volunteering, donating more and there have also been offers of help to individuals featured in the articles.

Just wanted to throw some kindness and optimism your way!

Hi Sinead, Good to hear! Some of the negative reactions to this series has shocked me… As one contributer put it though, most of us are no more than 3 months away from homelessness.

@Chris – you clearly have no understanding of homelessness.
In the vast majority of cases you cannot simply offer a person on the street your spare room as you suggest.
The needs of most homeless are very complex.

It is great that some people want to help out and we can all feel optimistic about the problem of homelessness , But really and truly if we as a nation want anything to be done that will actually address the problem we need to demand and if need be protest in grate numbers for the government to act and In act some meaningful systems and course of action to help and eradicate homelessness for good !!

How about doing a book with all the stories ,statistics etc, what the homeless have to say and what the public say, would raise awareness and money for the cause
Focus or simon could do it, it could be a best seller ,might even get more coverage and get people talking and thinking about the issue and crisis
The homeless show the vulnerability of the human condition and the injustice of the society that allows it to happen and get that bad for people struggling
Could happen anyone seems to be the sad stark fact

Exhausting the ignorance some have on the homeless – yes there are the pushers out there but they maybe the lower numbers in the count now. – common families are the new face.
    God Bless !

I for one do feel sorry for homeless people and realize that it can happen to anyone. But I do know people look down on homeless as a lot of them (not all) are drug addicts or alcoholic go around scaring the shit out of people. Try walking down o connell st and not get harassed at least once. I have gave money or a smoke to some homeless people not because I feel sorry for them but because I feel scared of what they will do our say if I don’t. Tell me I’m not the only one that feels this way.
