Homes evacuated after suspected bomb found in Monasterevin

The bomb squad was called out, and the scene was declared safe at 2.25pm this afternoon.

A NUMBER OF homes were evacuated near the Co Kildare town of Monasterevin this afternoon, after a suspicious device was found in a rural area.

Gardaí alerted the Defence Forces after arriving at the scene – and an Army bomb disposal team arrived at 1.20pm to carry out an initial examination.

According to a statement from the Defence Forces:

A cordon was established in the surrounding area and a number of houses were evacuated to ensure the safety of the residents.

The device was found to be a hoax, and the scene was declared safe at 2.25pm.

The object found will be handed over to investigating gardaí.

It was the first call out of the year for Army bomb disposal experts. There were 96 call-outs in 2016.
