4 of a kind: Homes for auction, from thatched cottage to period townhouse

A selection of unique properties around the country.

IN RECENT YEARS, property auctions have grown in popularity. For some, they represent an opportunity to snatch a purchase at a lower price – as well as typically involving a much faster process.

And while they might once have been associated with homes in poor repair, the range of properties available at auction is surprisingly broad.

So while they’re by no means a ticket to a guaranteed bargain, auctions can present a selection of unique properties at guide prices which look very enticing. Here we pick four on the market right now.

Cherrytree Cottage, Tara, Co Meath: Two bedroom bungalow, AMV €275k

Situated in the Boyne Valley around 5km from the ancient Hill of Tara, this historic stone cottage was built in 1880 – but has recently been sympathetically renovated, with retrofitting works also undertaken to improve energy efficiency.

Its living space is centred on a cosy sitting room area with solid fuel stove, which sits to the left of the entrance hallway. Balancing the floor plan to the other side are the two bedrooms, while a bright kitchen is to the rear. The back garden includes the namesake cherry tree.

3 Bowling Green, Galway city: Three bedroom terrace, AMV 350k

Across the road from Nora Barnacle’s former home in the heart of Galway city, this mid-terrace townhouse is nothing if not central. It also appears to have been well maintained and looked after.

The interior makes good use of its 90 square metres, with a large living room and kitchen/dining room on the ground floor and the three bedrooms above. In an unusual feature, a second flight of stairs leads up onto the roof of the kitchen extension, creating an innovative outdoor space.

Rosebawn, Gorey, Co Wexford: Four-bedroom detached, AMV €395k

This imposing period style home is a stone’s throw from the heart of lively Gorey, on the landmark Railway Road. Its double-fronted design creates a sense of space, with reception rooms to either side of a staircase and entrance hallway with decorative tiled floor. Also on the ground floor are a kitchen, family room, and guest WC.

Upstairs are four bedrooms, two of which are en suite, and a main bathroom. A very large outbuilding to the rear creates significant additional potential.

Holly Cottage, Headford, Co Galway: Four-bedroom thatched cottage, AMV €195k

This traditional cottage dates from the 1700s, and has since been restored and updated in combination with an adjoining building dating from the 1800s. Both were refurbished in the early 2000s, with living spaces in the earlier cottage while most of the bedrooms are in the later building.

Situated not far from the shores of Lough Corrib, five minutes’ drive from busy Headford and 20 minutes from Galway city, the property offers rustic charm with a significant measure of convenience.
