'Total mayhem': Four people taken to hospital after British army horses bolt through central London

The horses have since been recovered and returned to a nearby Army stable.

LAST UPDATE | 24 Apr 2024

FOUR PEOPLE NEEDED hospital treatment after seven British army horses bolted through central London after getting loose.

The group of seven horses and six soldiers from the Household Cavalry were on an extended exercise in Belgravia when the chaos erupted.

Four service personnel were thrown from their horses and five of the animals got loose, smashing into vehicles and causing a number of injuries.

It is believed the animals were spooked when some concrete being moved by builders hit the ground.

Ambulance crews treated four people in three separate incidents in Buckingham Palace Road, Belgrave Square, and at the junction of Chancery Lane and Fleet Street, in the space of just 10 minutes.

It is understood that three soldiers were assessed in hospital for their injuries, which were not thought to be serious.

A management consultant from south London who saw two of the horses galloping near Aldwych said the sight was “gruesome” and “like a weird dream”.

The pair were captured on the Highway near Limehouse, more than five miles from where they first bolted.

The 28-year-old, named only as Tula, told the PA news agency: “I got off the 172 bus which ends at Aldwych and two horses went flying past. One black, one white.

“The white one was drenched in blood from the chest down and they were galloping through the traffic at speed.

“People were stopping in the street shocked. The horses were running into fast-moving traffic and seemed terrified. Some unmarked police cars were chasing after them, which didn’t seem to be helping.

“I felt shocked. It was pretty gruesome. Felt like a weird dream.”

The drama began near Buckingham Palace Road where witnesses saw a serviceman thrown from his horse, and one of the loose animals crashed into a taxi waiting outside the Clermont Hotel, shattering the windows.

LBC spoke to the driver, Faraz, who said a white horse had collided with his Mercedes people carrier, leaving blood spattered down the side.

Another of the animals crashed into a tour bus, smashing the windscreen.

Two horses were then seen running in the road near Aldwych, one of which appeared to be covered in blood.

Jordan Pettitt, 26, who works for the PA news agency, said a white horse was “vividly” stained red with blood and he heard a black horse collide with a taxi.

He said: “The A4 at the Aldwych is usually pretty busy and it suddenly just fell silent.

“There was no traffic on the roads and all of a sudden we could hear some clattering of hooves just at the top of the road. Then coming down the top of the road were these two horses.

“They were coming down at quite a speed. They bolted southbound down the A4.

“Then as they came past me at some speed, they went straight down to the bottom of the road where it meets Fleet Street.

“The traffic lights were at red with a few buses and some taxis waiting there. These horses came hurtling down past the pedestrian crossing at that moment. Then the black horse collided with a black taxi.

“It was not to a great degree of power but it hit it strongly enough that we could hear it at the top of the road. You could hear the contact. Then it veered behind the taxi, went past the bus and headed eastbound on Fleet Street.

“The white horse that was with it looked like it doubled back on itself and then followed the black one as it went eastbound.”

The animals were later seen near the Limehouse Tunnel, before they were recaptured by City of London Police and taken away to be assessed by Army vets.

Roland, a worker for tour bus company Tootbus, described the chaotic scenes near Victoria.

“I saw horses come from the bus station in front of Victoria run around in a frenzy,” he said.

“People were running around to avoid them – it was total mayhem.”

A second tour bus worker, named only as Mahmood, said: “One of the horses bumped into a bus, then everything got out of control.

“I saw two horses without riders gallop away. One rider managed to calm his horse down.

“An ambulance went to assist another rider who had been injured.”

An Army spokesman said: “A number of military working horses became loose during routine exercise this morning.

“All of the horses have now been recovered and returned to camp.

“A number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention.”

I don’t see the problem here. I support same sex marriage 100% but it it a free country. This means we all have freedom of speech. There are no wrong opinions. It’s the priest’s choice and rights to express his point of view. He doesn’t have to conform to main stream ideology.

    @Tommy Chen:
Yes, it is a free country etc where people can hold whatever opinions they wish, however, from someone in his position within a community to be inciting such hatred so openly, it only takes one radical Christian lunatic to interpret that message in a particular way and then next we’ll have beatings and killings of homosexuals because “it’s a sin”.
As if the Catholic Church is so sacrosanct in the first place too. It’s been a hotbed of sin over the years with child abuse, mother and baby laundries, illegal adoption, beatings etc . So not only could the priests particular ideologies be interpreted in a particular way, it’s also incredibly hypocritical for him to be condemning something while representing an organisation that has done so much worse.

Free speech is fine, using your position/platform to express your opinions unbeknownst to your audience….not so ok, which is why so many walked out of the church.

The article in question is relating to comments made by a catholic priest, my comment was in relation to that. Whataboutery isn’t going to work here, it also adds nothing concrete just backs up my point really.
    Nice try though.

    @Tommy Chen: I agree.

I don’t agree with him at all, but I applaud his conviction to stand over his outdated views, despite the backlash he has brought on himself.

I don’t really understand the outrage. Those are the teachings of the Catholic Church. He’s a Catholic priest. If people don’t agree with those ridiculous, outdated beliefs they shouldn’t be part of a club that requires them to hold those beliefs

Why all the outrage. It’s not the Catholic Church’s job to agree with the prevailing ideology. Their job is to preach Catholic teachings and beliefs. That’s what this priest was doing. That’s what I would want to hear if I went to mass.

Odd, so many people disgusted with his comments, but still keep signing their kids up to the club. He is only reciting the long held views of his club, especially the leaders of it.

Yes, it is hateful, but you are happy enough to follow them so your kids can get a lovely day out whilst parents flash the largesse.

    Hypocrisy on all sides.

It used to be married couples who were told everything they did between the sheets was a sin. Now it’s same sex couples getting the “it’s a sin” treatment. I wish they’d just leave consenting adults to do as they please and concentrate their wrath on the real evil of sexual predators who prey on innocent children and shout about how sinful that is from the pulpit.

If the church has rules I think that’s fair enough and you either decide to follow the rules or not! But I think that it’s hilarious that the church can’t respect their own rules! Same-sex couples can’t marry in a church but heterosexual couples who are not allowed to have sex before marriage can get married in a church and even bring along their kids as proof that they did indeed have sex and have them even participate in the ceremony as flower girls etc. The church are a joke.
