10 people injured after Manchester house collapses in explosion

The cause of the explosion is not yet known.

AT LEAST TEN people have been injured following an explosion at a house in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 5am after the property on Curzon Street collapsed.

Three people were in the house at the time of the explosion.

Paramedics treated the casualties at the scene and they have now been taken to hospital suffering with burns and lacerations. One of the victims is being treated for major burns.

Incident commander at the scene Alan Ashworth said:

We have stabilising equipment on both sides of the building as there is a potential risk of collapse.

“We are aware of two collapses so far and therefore are trying to prevent another.

“We don’t yet know the cause of the explosion and our fire investigation team are at the scene working with the police.”

Describing the scene when crews arrived, Ashworth said, “There were a number of people injured on the floor and it was obvious there had been an explosion in the house.

“We helped them but they were later treated by paramedics from North West Ambulance Service while we tackled the fire using covering jets.

Some people were also injured while helping to rescue people. We had one person who brought a mattress for one of the casualties to get out.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the gas and electricity supplies were turned off at the house and four neighbouring properties.
