Fire service fights large gorse blaze on Howth Hill

There are five units of the fire brigade on the scene dealing with the situation.

THE FIRE SERVICE is battling  a large gorse fire on Howth Hill in Dublin.

A spokesperson from the Dublin Fire Brigade said a gorse fire had broken out in the area and that five units are currently attending the scene.

The fire has been spreading, but so far no houses are being threatened.

However, there is the possibility that could change due to weather conditions.

Locals are being advised to leave their homes if the fire gets anywhere near them.

It is understood a number of homes in the Green Hollow area have been evacuated due to a fire and smoke risk.

I remember large fires on Howth Hill when I was young about 70 years ago. There was no threat to homes as not too many houses there.

I’m down the hill toward the harbour. Thanks to the Journal for letting me know where the shmoke was from.

DFB management said the clothing is suitable for its purpose. The ‘Keep Away From Fire’ label is obviously more of a guideline than a rule. Panic over. ;)

I was told a fire on Ireland’s Eye years ago sent thousands of rats swimming to Howth harbour where they came ashore and caused quite a commotion.. Quite a swim if your’re only a foot long. I wonder how did they navigate?

The Airport flight path from the East comes just north of Howth Head so if there was a southerly wind blowing smoke on to the flight path it could affect it. Not sure why people don’t like my original comment .

It’s not about liking your comment planes land into wind so no matter where they come from they land into wind which tonight the wind is easterly so that’s the direction they land meaning they all approach from a westerly direction .
